Beschreibung

English summary: The theme of language and migration- and therefore multilingualism- plays a central role in the discussion about the integration of people living in Germany with a migrant background. Our understanding of multilingualism forms the basis for all decisions about educational policies, decisions which often have far-reaching consequences. In particular, this volume is addressed to educational professionals within the fields of philology and language studies from the third semester, which concerns the basic information for phonology, morphology, syntax and orthography. This book is chiefly concerned with some widely-disseminated modern myths about multilingualism and shows the complex connections between language, ethnicity, nationality, and registration. Other themes are also addressed in this work, such as "code switching," which is a person's ability to change between one or more languages or "codes" in a single conversation, "Kiezdeutsch," or the German spoken by young-people, the role of multilingualism in literacy, multilingual studies, and much more.
