Das Wort Ballade entstammt der okzitanischen Sprache der südfranzösischen mittelalterlichen Trobadordichtung. Es bezeichnete ursprünglich eine Gattung des Tanzliedes. In der deutschsprachigen Literatur wird seit dem 18. Jahrhundert ein mehrstrophiges, erzählendes Gedicht als Ballade bezeichnet. Eine Ballade in der Klaviermusik ist eine formal nicht festgelegte Gattung des 19. Jahrhunderts.
