The contributors to this book trace the development of the modern literary sensibility, focusing particularly on the literatures of Turkey, Egypt, Iran, Israel and North Africa. The period is divided roughly into three broad phases: the age of translation from 1850, when formerly self-sufficient Arab communities began to reach out to the West for new ideas and stylistic models; the surge of romantic nationalism after World War I and the collapse of imperialism; and the modern period after 1950.
