Description
Lieutenant Benjamin Sherburne (1757-1828) is the author's fourth great-grandfather. He fought in the American Revolution for the Rhode Island Line as a young man, and later in the War of 1812, mustering in East Greenbush, New York. This novel, based on the patriot's life, begins in 1775 and ends in 1790 as he and his wife, Helena De Key Wendell (whose family connections include Abigail Adams), await the birth of a child. It is a wild ride through the decades of war and uneasy peace, of murder and liberation, and of unrest and rescue in Haiti. Hold your breath as "Lieutenant Ben" awaits the Hessian onslaught at Fort Mercer, suffers the winter at Valley Forge, recruits slaves for the defense of Newport, dashes to Boston with the Marquis de Lafayette, and faces an unknown peace at Yorktown as the war draws to a close. What now lies ahead for this man who knows only war, has lost love, and rides into the unknown with a passionate, volatile woman? (Description from external book data)
