Die bildstarke Utopie einer exkludierenden Ästhetik war ab 1884 wegleitend für deutsche Siedler in Afrika. Architektur und Städtebau gerieten dabei vordergründig zum Instrument der Verwandlung Südwestafrikas zu einem »Schaufenster« deutscher Hegemonie. Die Baurealität vor Ort sah indes anders aus: Sie führte zur Auflösung heimatlicher Ideen, bot Alternativen zu europäischen Bemächtigungsstrategien und brachte als eine überraschend durchlässige Kulturpraxis verschiedene Lebenswelten miteinander in Kontakt. Als die Wunschvorstellung eines linearen Transfers aufgegeben wurde, offenbarte sich das kollektive Neue, das wir heute erleben; ein funktionaler Verandenbau, ein luftiges Beamtenhaus, eine monochrom leuchtende Herberge. Der Begriff der Kontaktarchitektur wird hier erstmals eingeführt, um etablierte Kriterien der Architekturanalyse auf den Prüfstand zu stellen und neue Perspektiven im Umgang mit dem hybriden Erbe in den ehemaligen Kolonien zu gewinnen. In der Verbindung von Kolonialarchitekturgeschichte und Kulturwissenschaften präsentiert dieser Band ein Modell für die systematische Analyse von geostrategischer Architektur im postkolonialen Umfeld. The picturesque utopia of exclusive aesthetics paved the way for German settlers in Africa from 1884. Architecture and urban development became the main instrument of South West Africa’s transition to a German hegemonial »window«. However, the building reality there was different: it led to the dissolution of local ideas, offered alternatives to European possessive strategies and brought surprisingly permeable cultural practices of different lifestyles in contact. As the concept of a linear transfer was abandoned, the collective novelty was revealed; a functional veranda, an airy office building, a monochrome shining hostel. The concept of Kontaktarchitektur (contact architecture) is introduced here for the first time to examine established criteria of architecture analysis and to gain new perspectives in dealing with the hybrid legacy of the former colonies. In connection with colonial architecture history and cultural studies this volume presents a model for a systematic analysis of geostrategic architecture in a post-colonial environment.
