Apart from being a prolific author - his literary output included historical novels, science fiction and histories of the Boer War and the First World War, he was an early champion of the Channel Tunnel, he played cricket for the MCC, was an advocate of Spiritualism, introduced cross country skiing to Switzerland and he was acquainted with many public figures of the late Victorian and Edwardian period.
